HoB Demolition?

I love these weapon tweaks and such that the coders are posting about - the mod really does need these changes. And we all know what we want from this mod: all the essential features of the UO version, especially custom maps with static spawns and better cap zones.

What I'm wondering here, is that during the months it takes to produce a small map pack, would it be possible to introduce a transitory gametype called HoB Demolition. We would use stock S&D maps, and it would require code to allow (1: respawning at the start spawns (2: both objectives to be destroyed for attacker victory (this would make teamwork important, eventhough it only takes one player to plant the explosives). With these two changes, we would have a great new game until the real one is finished.

The reason why? I've heard too many players say, "I'd like that game but for the random spawns." This could be a quick fix for that. Of course it only works if the coders can do it, (there was a mod gametype for CoD1 called reinforced S&D where you respawned, but that was then) and can do it without taking too much of their time from the main mod.

I think HoB Demolition would be really fun - more fun than the defend-only maps in old HoB, and it would attract the kind of player who will then want to transition to full-blown HoB Cap & Hold.

I know this sounds strange, but give it some thought, BB1 and Upholder. There was a Day of Defeat gametype like this, and it was really popular. I know it's not what we want, but domination flags and random spawns aren't it either.

Interesting idea there and one worthy of consideration, but isn't that more like Sabotage? Have to say that I quite like the Sabatage gametype and would be more inclined to investigate that gametype.

it is like Sabotage but the player can always come back. more like a search and destroy version of sabotage where if the enemy defuses the bomb they win and if the allies plant it and destroy the object then they win. if you get killed you just wait for a respawn timer instead of the next round. seems interesting to me.

I really like Sabotage, too - it's maybe the best standard gametype in CoD - I'll play it anytime. But spawning is still semi-random in Sabotage: each team spawns somewhere on their half of the map (which is better than anywhere on the whole map).

What I've proposed for HoB Demolition would give us, in effect, small defend-only maps with static spawns (much like old HoB) -- with only 2 coding changes. No mappers required. :shock:

I know the defend-only maps weren't as popular as cap-n-hold, but I think this is very close to the spirit of the original HoB. And it would make the WaW stock maps useful. Admittedly, there would only be 2 objectives, but really, it was always about the last cap in the old game anyway.

I don't know how difficult it would be to require demolition of both S&D objectives (the bomb would have to re-spawn). But that would be essential, I think. Interestingly, I was checking-out some S&D maps by myself, and I jumped off of a height and died - and to my surprised I re-spawned at my starting point. So that makes me think that turning the start spawns into static re-spawns may be possible.
